Antigone

by Jean Anouihl, Adapted by Lewis Galantiere

Directed by Brady Amoonclark, Artistic Director,

Children's Shakespeare Theatre

Children’s Shakespeare Theatre takes a short break from Shakespeare as we start our twenty-fourth season

and present Antigone by Jean Anouilh, Adapted by Lewis Galantiere.

A compelling classic play about questioning authority.

Presented by children ages 8-15, Jean Anouilh’s play is a tragedy inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone (441 BC) and was first
performed in Paris in 1944 during the Nazi occupation. Galantiere translated and adapted it, and this version was first performed in NY in 1946.

This play straddles ancient Greek tragedy and 1940's urbanity with a message that is still resonant today.

Antigone, King Creon’s niece, decides she must bury her brother’s slain body against the wishes of the King. The play that follows is a
stirring human drama and dialectic on the use and abuses of power and authority versus the integrity of the individual.
